Expert tips for plant and lawn care, seasonal maintenance, and common landscape challenges
Your landscape is more than plants in the ground. It’s a carefully crafted balance of engineering, soil science, water management, and aesthetics. Like any thriving garden, it needs care and attention to stay strong and healthy. With the right steps each season, your plants and lawn will flourish and reward you with lasting natural beauty. For long-term results, a professional maintenance plan helps ensure your landscape remains both beautiful and functional for years ahead.
Seasonal Plant Care
Spring
- Refresh mulch around plants to conserve moisture and reduce weeds.
- Inspect irrigation systems and adjust for seasonal needs.
- Fertilize lawns and beds with natural, slow-release products.
- Prune spring-blooming shrubs after flowers fade.
- Watch for new growth — young plants may need extra water.
Summer
- Water deeply and less often encourages strong root growth.
- Check soil before watering: if it’s still moist 2–3 inches down, wait another day.
- Provide shade cloth for sensitive plants during extreme heat.
- Mow lawns higher (3–4") to protect roots from sun stress.
- Weed regularly to reduce competition for water and nutrients.
Fall
- Plant bulbs and hardy perennials for next spring.
- Mulch garden beds to insulate roots for winter.
- Rake leaves from lawns to prevent suffocation.
- Reduce irrigation as the rain returns.
- Prune lightly to remove dead or damaged growth.
Winter
- Protect tender plants with burlap or frost cloth if needed.
- Avoid heavy pruning while plants are dormant.
- Keep lawns clear of debris to prevent mold and rot.
- Check drainage to ensure rainwater doesn’t pool around roots.
- Use this quiet season to plan new additions or maintenance needs.
Lawn Care Tips
- Watering: Lawns thrive with deep, infrequent watering. Overwatering may cause fungal issues; too little water can lead to browning.
- Sunlight: A healthy lawn needs 4–6 hours of sun daily. Too much sun can dry and thin grass, while too little encourages moss.
- Mowing: Keep mower blades sharp and never cut more than one-third of the grass height at a time.
- Feeding: Apply organic fertilizers to build soil health naturally.
Troubleshooting Plant Health
- Too Little Water: Leaves curl, droop, or turn crispy; soil feels dry several inches down.
- Too Much Water: Leaves yellow, roots rot, and soil stays soggy.
- Too Much Sun: Leaves may fade, scorch, or dry at the tips.
- Too Little Sun: Plants may grow leggy, pale, or fail to flower.
